Chasing Airwaves follows Space Joe as a high school student determined to find communication signals from outer space. Using homemade equipment and pieced together technology, Space Joe has converted his car into a mobile SETI device, hell- bent on being the first person on Earth to discover the coveted first signs of intelligent life in outer space. Joe has a keen interest and, perhaps, some sense of outer space awareness. Does Joe actually hear “the voices from above keep on calling” or are those voices a metaphor for the inspiration driving his ideas? An Air Force army brat, part-time mechanic and astral enthusiast, Joe has repaired a discarded jet engine and attached it to his car hood. In practical terms, it is to increase his search efficiency as he can speedily cover more search area. In symbolic terms, it expresses Joe’s desire for flight and adventure. In realistic terms, it looks cool. Nearly avoiding an accident with an oncoming car, Joe hits the ditch under a bridge and fires up the jet engine to gain momentum to launch himself out, using the steep embankment as a ramp. Underestimating, or miscalculating, the initial power of the jet engine, Joe launches himself into the atmosphere and has his first, albeit brief, zero gravity experience before crash landing.
lyrics
Chasing Airwaves
I got the tin foil wrapped on my head
Antennas sticking out of my briefcase
S.O.N.O.R. scanning searching the sky
Transistors on my dash try to blink to life
I got to find it, I got to know
Expand the scanners strength on my laptop
I got to find it, I got to know
Hear if space slime really wants to talk
Speeding far away from the city
Creating dirt clouds made of gravel
My aviator goggles get gritty
I want to find the blip to make Frank Black flip and space travel
Signals move and disappear
Seeking out the fuzzy modulations
Cover more ground than a standing dish
Chasing airwaves to where the static is clear
I need to find it, I need to know
The binary secrets of talking
I need to find it, I need to know
Voices from above keep on calling
Speeding far away from the city
Skipped another day of high school
What can they ever teach me?
I will find new space talking and all the kids will study me
Speeding far away from the city
Jet engine on the car hood
Keep the wheel and gas pedal steady
Missed the car and hit the switch
Swerve past the bridge and launch myself
In the air
And hope my landing’s clear
(And this could be my turn
Waiting for the after-burn
Wait for the soft landing
And hope the atmosphere doesn’t burn
And hope my body doesn’t break in two)
