Space Joe has taken a single seated lunar hover bike for a tour of the Moon and to collect his thoughts. He has learned that Moon’s surface is periodically groomed to eliminate traces of movement. True, visits to the Moon are rare, and usually only conducted under the watchful eye of the U.G.G.P., but extensive measures are being enacted to keep the organization secret until the deemed appropriate time. He travels to a vantage point where he sees the Earth below. The planet where he grew up now seems like a newly remembered dream where upon awaking the dreamer has the idea, or essence, of what happened in the dreamscape but the details are out or order and unclear.
Joe does not regret his decision to become space bound, but regrets not telling any of his family or friends his plan, knowing they would not understand or allow him to carry out his plan. His biggest regret is Maia, the wife he left behind and the future he will not know. He can return to Earth and eventually visit, once his probation is over, but at what cost? Would his return to Earth just create the issues and grief he avoided by not telling her in the first place? Even if he finally did return to Earth would she still want him, or would she have moved on into a new chapter in her life?
As Joe observes the blue and white planet below, Maia is standing on her balcony, looking up in to the night sky. She wonders where Joe is and what he is doing, if he is safe or if he even survived the trip he was taking to wherever he was going. Maia always had an intuition that Joe was never completely happy. It was not their relationship that she questioned, well…not exactly, but Joe always seemed distracted, unfocused, as though he were constantly looking for something, as though there was a critical part of his being he was yet to discover.
Remembering when Joe first began his training for the I.S.R.P, Maia recalls the exuberance in his eyes, the sense of excitement he felt and his dedication to his training. Relief descended upon her like a gentle rain as she felt that Joe had finally found his calling, the missing piece to his incomplete psyche. She never would have guessed his intention to leave everyone behind, especially her. Joe’s transition from her emotional satellite to her physical satellite is not without its consequences.
As Joe and Maia look at each others respective planet and satellite, they reflect, lament, ask questions and give answers that the other person would want to have answered.
